I have been looking for one of these for several months. I found this one with enough condition to own and still be affordable…

I’d say that’s a pretty nice specimen for an 1873 carbine.  Nice find.

Very nice! Difficult to find “73” carbines in decent condition.

Were you specifically looking for a 38-40 caliber or just a 73 carbine in good condition?

I bought a SRC from Mike Venturino several years ago when he was buying machine guns and writing his book on small arms of WWII. I never did care much for that stuff and took advantage of him when he was selling stuff to fund his WWII guns. After it was done, he came back to his roots with Western guns and started buying Colts and Winchesters again.

He told me he wanted the SRC back and I told him I would sell it back to him if I could find a ’73 SRC in 38-40 as that is my preference in Colt/Winchester chamberings. It has been months and I finally found this one and as luck would have it, I had the money to buy it.

I don’t know how many SRC they made in 38-40, but I would like to find out.

It is always painful to look at your recent purchases.  The level of (painful) envy I feel is substantial.  Whether it is a M95 .40-72, a Burgess two-barrel set .44-40, a Whitney-Kennedy SRC, and on and on, they are all very interesting and desirable pieces.  And I like your .38/40 plenty.  I had a SRC in this caliber once, but it was not in the condition of yours.  I was thinking how people always say they don’t know what to get me for Christmas.  The answer is so simple:  “have Shrapnel pick something out for me.”

Congratulations on your find 🙂

According to my survey I come up with 110972 in 44 caliber, 5764 in 38 cal and 4323 in 32 caliber if I extrapolate it out to 720,600 guns. The only thing I didn’t take in account is subtracting the guns before the 38 and 32 calibers came out.

Bob,

Thanks for your information. I always knew that only a fraction were 38-40, but I didn’t know what that number was.

Thanks, Kirk

You must see a few of the Bolt guns I recently bought. They aren’t Winchester, but Sako. These are rare as well.

22 Hornet, 218 Bee in Riihimaki actions and a 244 Remington in an L57…

I took the SRC out today to get it to shoot POA. It was shooting high, and I don’t want to mess with the front sight, so I took an older Carbine express sight that had a broken blade on it and went shooting. It was a lower rear notch than the original carbine sight that came on the gun, but it was still shooting high.

I took a small 3 corner file and deepened the rear notch a tad and it shoots perfect. The can has 2 bullets through that hole. Good enough for rabbit hunting…

Nice shooting.  It sure seems the vast majority of what you buy ends up shooting well.  The rabbit population knows this very well. Of course, you probably look down the bore before you purchase something 😉

I know those nice-looking Sako’s are quite collectable.  I have never owned a Sako and I am grateful the Sako is at least one bug I have managed to not be bitten by.

Was at a local show this weekend and found another 38 SRC on a table with no finish left and a replaced tube.

Very nice, especially considering it’s a good shooter. In my mind it’s hard to beat the 38WCF but I’m a bit of a contrarian on things like that.

Can only imagine Mike’s pain when he came back to his roots and set out to replace some of the guns he sold off to chase milsurps. I’ve never been drawn to the milsurp thing, probably just as well. My finances barely cover my limited interests, pretty sure they wouldn’t survive a foray into other areas.

The 38-40 is also my favorite cartridge of the Models 1873/1892 variety.

Any idea why? For some reason I’m drawn to the 38WCF and to a lesser degree the 32WCF but when asked recently I couldn’t give a reason why. Could be the misleading name or the underdog/new kid on the block relationship to the 44WCF or my general dislike for the 44WCF and all things 44(43). Or do we need a reason why? I dunno.

I fit into the 38-40 fan club. It is my favorite handgun/rifle cartridge. It is really a 40 caliber round and not that much less in comparison to the 44-40, but for some reason, I favor the 38-40 and shoot it 10X more than either my 44-40’s or 45 Colts. I haven’t warmed up to a 32-20 or 25-20 yet, but even if I did, nothing would replace my love of the 38-40.

Mike

First of all, the 44-40 is really a 43-40 and the 38-40 is really a 40-40.  The 44-40 fires a 200 grain bullet and the 38-40 fires a 180 grain bullet.  So the comparison is really between a 43-40-200 cartridge vs a 40-40-180 cartridge.  Almost an insignificant difference.

2nd, the 38-40 being a less popular variation, much better condition weapons can be found in the 38-40 version.

3rd, the 38-40 has just as much punch as the 44-40 but much less recoil.

4th, per COTW, the muzzle velocity of the 38-40 is higher than the 44-40 and the muzzle energy is only slightly lower.

5th, the 38-40 was John Wayne’s favorite SAA Colt sidearm.

And…personally, I have 2000 32-20 reloaded cartridges, 200 38-40 and 200 44-40 cartridges in my ammo safe.
