My wife needed to go to the Colombian Consulate in Houston to renew her passport. Surprise, surprise less than 2 miles from Collector’s Firearms! They are in a new building and parts of their display cases rival some museums I’ve been to!
So I settled on a Model 70, chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. Used, with a custom stock, and 1″ rings. None of the scopes I have fit; the barrel of my scopes are too short to fit the rings. Serial Number is in the G2,22x,xxx range. An y suggestions on a scope and date of manufacture? Nothing pops up on Winchester’s website for the S/N.
Tim,
I was just in their new store & location a week ago, and Yes, it is much improved over the previous store. I spent a few hours wandering the isles between the many racks of old Winchesters.
In answer to your question, the Model 70 you purchased is a very late production U.S. Repeating Arms Company manufactured rifle. My best guess is mid to late 1990s.

Timothy-
Take a look at Leupold’s offerings. My post 64’s wear VX-3’s in 3.5-10 and 4.5-14 with plenty of tube length to adjust for eye relief. I shoot cull deer so I like the magnification these scopes offer.
I need to allocate some time for a trip to Collector’s Firearms on my next Houston trip.
Mike
Timothy –
I think if it were mine I would buy a scope like what Mike suggests. There might be an option to use one of the shorter scopes you have. I don’t know what type of mounts the rifle has but some bases will accept an extension ring. You would use it in reversed position (if mounted on front ring or as is if mounted on rear ring). I’m just speculating this may work. You can go to Ebay and search, “scope extension ring” and you will see a couple of styles.
An early Christmas present is always fun!
Thanks for the answers and suggestions. Someone on another gun forum suggested that if I turned the rear scope ring base 180 degrees I would probably have shortened the width of the base enough to use any number of 1” diameter scopes I have.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years All!

That might work. It would sure be a simple solution. Good luck!
