A friend just found this behind the door in her Dad’s office. It’s an 1894 with serial #381xx. I have found references indicating its year of manufacture from 1894-1898, but think it is 1895. I won’t see it in person for another month, but am curious as to whether the magazine tube shipped that way or was cut down? It is an octagon barrel.

I think I need a better office! I never find random firearms behind doors awaiting discovery.
We need many close up photographs including especially of the barrel, including the underside, as well as the magazine, in order to fully assess.

Model 1894 serial number 38100 was manufactured in March of the year 1898.
I suspect that both the barrel and the magazine tube have been shortened (cut down). Measure the barrel length, and post a picture of the magazine tube end cap.

She said it looked like there was a screw hole under the barrel towards the muzzle, so I think it has been cut down. She sent two more photos. I have several hundred guns to go through, the bulk of them Winchester lever actions, for her and to find homes for.
It appears I can only post one photo per reply, which is kind of limiting.
I have couple of ‘94’s I recently inherited, wondering if I can get some insight on how original they are and estimated value. I need to insure them. My Father in law gave them to me right before his passing and I have no intentions of ever getting rid of them. Hell of a man!

Your picture link worked perfectly.
Your Model 1894 Sporting Rifle was manufactured in late June 1908. Unfortunately, both the barrel and the magazine tube have been cut down (shortened). Originally, both were 26-inchs long.
If it still shoots accurately, it is worth approximately $500.

This Model 1894 was manufactured in October of 1897, making it a bona fide “Antique” per federal regulations. It is a standard Sporting Rifle. Based on what I am seeing in the pictures, it appears to have been at least partially refinished at some time its past, and the sights on it are not original to the rifle.
What is the condition of the bore?

I am wondering about the buttplate/buttstock on this one.

The bore looks very good I’m not an expert but compared to a lever action Savage 308 I bought brand new and only have about 60 rounds through it looks almost the same.
Wade,
What you have is an Antique Model 1894 Sporting Rifle that has been highly modified in its past life. The barrel and magazine tube are cut down, and the butt stock is not original. Accordingly, the rifle will not have any significant value in the “collector” market. With a decent bore, and “antique”, I would value it at $1,200.
