I am selling an early 1894 Takedown in 30 WCF  S.N. 12930, and a fellow asked me to send pics of the Nickel Steel marks on the barrel.  I couldn’t find any external markings, so I pulled the fore stock and found the following underneath.

Are these early Nickel Steel proofs?  Please excuse the poor clarity of the photos, but it was a very difficult subject to capture.

Thanks in advance for any expansion on the topic.

The stamp on the bottom of the barrel is actually “M.N.S.” which is Midvale Nickel Steel.

Thanks Bert.

Due to the very light strikes, I was debating whether there was a letter in front of the N, or not.  But now that you have identified an M, I can (barely) see it with a loupe.

So, can I assume that this is the type of nickel steel proof which would have been used on an original barrel from 1895-6?

Martin,

It is not a “proof”. Instead, it is merely the steel maker’s marking.
