I am putting my 64 back together and wanted to get the peep sight that is mounted in the two small factory holes on the left side of the receiver at the top. Can I get suggestions for which site to use? Thanks in advance. Peter

The very best peep for your M64 is a period correct Lyman M56. Nice sight.    Big Larry

Winchester used the Lyman No. 56 for most Model 64 rifles ordered with a peep sight.  In the later production years, the Lyman No. 66A was used.

So since mine is a 1953 vintage made rifle, would either one work? I thought I read somewhere that some of the 64’s were outfitted with a Williams peep at the factory. Thanks for help, Peter

Yes, either a Lyman No. 56 or a Lyman No. 66 would be correct. Winchester did not install Williams peep sights… they were always an aftermarket sight. For what it is worth, the Williams sights are clunky looking, and not nearly as nicely made as the Lyman receiver sights.

Stroebel’s book lists the Redfield 70 as a factory option for the model 71.  I don’t remember seeing a 71 with one on it but the Redfield is quite a nice sight, too.

I have surveyed (56) Model 71s with a Redfield receiver sight.

When I think of the Lyman 56a, I always think of the Winchester 71.  I meant to say that I don’t remember seeing it on a 64…..Kiss

The Model 71 used the No. 56W.

The 71 used both the 56a and the 56w….but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 56w.

Nick Stroebel’s book calls for a 56A or 56W71. I have never seen a 56W71 marked sight, has anyone? T/R

Not according to Winchester… only the 56W was listed in their catalogs.  All of the Model 71s that I have personally verified in hand with a No. 56 were the W type.

That’s interesting.  I have seen several dozen 71’s with 56a sights but I can’t ever remember seeing one marked w or w71.

What is the earliest catalog that lists the 56w?

The January 1948 catalog is the first to list the No. 56W.  All catalogs from 1936 through 1941 list only the No. 98A bolt-peep or the No. 22K as the available rear sights.  The Lyman No. 56A is listed for the Model 64 Deer Rifle as an optional rear sight.

I saw this on Ebay but was a bit suspicious because of condition and price. Is this the correct sight for my 64? Peter

Peter,

Yes, that is the correct sight for a 1950s production Model 64.
