I have a nice 1915 production (778xxx) Eastern carbine with a tang sight and barrel dovetail filler and a rifle stock that appear to be all original, matching wear, finish etc. My question is the barrel markings are forward of the forearm band as you would see on correct trapper barrels.. but this is a 20″ carbine barrel? have I passed over something in my reading? Is this common? Thanks for your input. – Mike.
Hello Mike,
The address location on the barrel is common for the Carbines manufactured in the same serial number range as your Eastern Carbine. I have three other nearly identical Eastern Carbines in my research survey very close to yours… 766118, 770141, & 779414.

Is that address location correct for a sporting rifle barrel? It is also interesting that this carbine has a rifle butt stock on itMichael
That is a special order carbine ordered in a “rifle” configuration. In addition to the rifle butt stock, it was also ordered without the saddle ring and the rear sight dovetail moved forward to accommodate the longer rifle sight (which has since been replaced with the blank filler). That is the reason for the barrel address being moved forward of the barrel band. If it hadn’t moved, the dovetail for the rear sight would have cut into the address. I have one in the same configuration and one is also pictured in Reneberg’s 1894 book. Here’s a link to mine.
