I went to the Oregon Arms Collectors gun show this morning and came home with an unusual 1894 carbine.  It has a rifle butt stock, no saddle ring, and California/full buckhorn rifle rear sight.  Serialized in 1916.  The center of the rear sight dovetail is 4 inches from the receiver ring and the barrel address roll marking is located forward of the forearm barrel band to accommodate the positioning of the rear rifle style sight.  This carbine is the same exact configuration of the 1894 carbine featured at the bottom of page 95 in Robert Renneberg’s 2nd edition of the 1894 book.  Evidently, it is a special order carbine with many rifle-like features.  I normally go for higher condition Winchesters for my collection, but I like the unusual too.  It is actually very nice condition minus the flaked finish on the receiver.  Bore is excellent.  I felt I couldn’t go wrong at $875.  Heck, the California buckhorn sight is worth +$300 alone.  Thoughts?

Bert,

How many 1894’s do you have in your survey that are this configuration?

Thanks,

Don

It seems that Winchester must have done some “special” guns in batches. I have an identical piece serial number 854021.  I purchased it about 1995 and paid $750 back then.  My “hybrid” also has a Lyman 1A tang sight.  The flaking was minimal at the time I purchased it and even though it has remained unused and in my safe the flaking has increased dramatically.  Great pictures, thanks for posting.  RDB

Don,

I have (34) recorded thus far (including both your new Eastern Carbine, and the one Roger has).  The earliest specimen in the survey thus far is serial number 362375;

362375, 363653, 398898, 400100, 432216, 445234, 459787, 459865, 459877, 464666, 466898, 469204, 474181, 504312, 646143, 770141, 778574, 779414, 806146, 816222, 817224, 817342, 817703, 832405, 848066, 849456, 853144, 854021, 855780, 857466, 862375, 976179, 977280, 993523.

In addition to the Eastern Carbines with a rifle butt, I also have approximately a dozen SRC’s with crescent (rifle) butt stocks & plates.

Thanks Bert.  Was serial# 832405 a new entry in your survey or did you already have it?  Also, if you noticed in the last photo is serial# 968515 from page 95 in Bob Renneberg’s book.  I don’t see that one in your list above, so maybe you’ll have 35 recorded now.  Would you add any value for this configuration vs. a standard configured eastern carbine of the same era?

Don,

I already had your Eastern Carbine in the survey. The one shown in Bob’s book is a new entry.

In regards to your question about the value, I would not add any extra value for the rifle butt stock & plate.
