Guys,

I have a Winchester 70 Stainless Classic Camo rifle in .270 WSM.

I’ve had this gun for several years now. It has the old Mauser style controlled feed.

Real good gun but I dislike the polymer camouflage stock.

Now do the other newer Winchester 70 rifles use the same stock?

I am looking for a laminated one if possible.

Thanks!

The vast majority of the fellow collectors on the WACA forums are not familiar with post-1963 production Model 70 rifles. While you undoubtedly have a fine rifle, it is not a "collectable" Model 70.

Your gun being in .270 WSM has a short-action stock. Therefore you will need to buy a short-action stock for replacing it. The longer cartridges use the longer-action. For example a .300 Win Mag would use the long action stock. Where as the .300 WSM would use the short action stock. Also there is a two piece floor plate and a one piece floor plate. I’m not sure which version your gun has. If it has the two piece they make and sell an adapter for it. Otherwise the one piece should just drop right in. Of course this depends on what kind of replacement stock you get.

Hope that helps some. Only reason I know this, I bought a Model 70 black shadow in .300WSM when they 1st come out. Its a featherweight type polymer stock. Its too dam light weight. The gun kills at bought ends. I’ve been looking to get a replacement walnut stock for it or leading the current stock. I don’t know why these gun companies have gone to these lightweight stocks. Unless you live in the plain states and have to haul it around everywhere, I don’t see the advantage. Here in Louisiana I doubt I’ll walk 100 yards with my model 70 for hunting. Half the time I’ll park the 4-wheeler under the stand and see deer all day long. So give me a bull barreled 10-pounder all day long so I can reach out and touch em.

Sincerely,
Maverick
