I went to a local gun show today and came across a Winchester hand-loading tool for the 40-70 WCF cartridge. I know that this is a rare caliber in the model 1886 and was just wondering how rare the hand-loading tools are in this caliber. I know these tools are rather plentiful in the more common calibers, but this is the first one I’ve ever come across in 40-70 WCF and was wondering if my $25.00 investment was a good buy or not. It is just missing internal de-capping pin portion, which I heard is rather common. Condition-wise, I would say it’s in average used condition with a mixture of blue, patina, and minor surface rust.

Wow! That was a real bargain, especially for the caliber. If you ever decided to move it along, you will certainly be able to triple your investment, and more!

With the condition your referring to, I think you got a steal. Majority of the re-loading tools will be missing the original de-capping pin, there is a couple of guys out there making reproduction pins. The repo pins are generally fairly easy to spot and they run from $15-40 bucks on there own.

The 38-70 & the 40-70 caliber tools in the Model 1894 Tool are some of the less common calibers. But they do turn up fairly regularly, more so than anything in the .50 calibers. Even some of the common calibers are hard to buy, like those in 45-70, because people still use them.

Maverick,

I know you did not intend to type 1894!

I am not positive but, I think I have seen loading tools for other calibers and the box label said 1894 loading tools. Will go back and check that. I think that was what Maverick was referring to.

I am looking for a Winchester 1894 loading tool in caliber 45-90 WCF.
I saw one on ebay but the seller did not want to sell to Sweden so….
Any help at all should be very much appreciated.

The loading tool has a patent date of 1894 so it’s refer to the tool as the 94 tool. I had several sets in the 38-70 in the past but I think I’m down to one complete set and one lone tool. I even had a 38-70 Ideal tool.

As the Model 1894 Tool was the only tool chambered in 38-70 and 40-70 calibers. Yes I mean the 1894 Tool. Another reason for the scarceness of the Tool in these calibers is that they were only produced from mid 1893-1900. That is not quite (7) seven years. Were as most of the other available calibers in the 1894 Tool were produced anywhere from mid 1893-1915. That is close to 22 years.

The only other Winchester Reloading Tools even close were the model 1882 & 1875 Tools chambered in 40-70 Ballard, Sharps Straight, Sharps Bottle Neck. The 1875 Tool was also chambered in 40-70 What Cheer.

If you have or have seen a Winchester Tool chambered in 40-70w.c.f. in other than the Model 1894 Tool, it would be a very rare & valuable & most likely special ordered Tool.

Bob
Also Winchester referred to in there company catalogs and other literature as the "Model 1894 Tool" not just merely by the patent date. Just as they did the "Model 1891 Tool". As I’m sure you already knew this.

Sincerely,
Maverick

Sorry If it seemed misleading that I was referring to the "Tool Model" and not the gun model, nature of the beast I suppose. Forgot also to mention that the 38-70 and 40-70w.c.f. cartridges were introduced in the year 1894. And that is why the Model 1894 Tool is the only reloading tool that Winchester offered for them.

If you get a hold of one, post us a pic! I wouldn’t mind having a model 1885 rifle in 40-70.
