Over the weekend at a local gun shop, I saw a model 94 carbine with 15" barrel, it had the 1" shorter fore stock, and also has the ATF letter placing it on C&R, by serial number. The serial number is 2,27 something. Can’t remember the rest. Do you think this gun is factory original?

Thanks,

Al

Al,

2.27 what? Was it 6-digits or 7-digits? If the serial number was 2.27-million, then NO, it is not factory original.

I called and got the entire s/n. It’s 2279835. The owner has a hand written letter from George Madis as this came from his collection, and he also has the BATF letter, with s/n listed.

Something sounds fishy to me. Per the National Firearms Act of 1934, wasn’t it unlawful to produce any firearm with with with a rifled barrel less than 16 inches in length? Being a 1958 produced gun, this doesn’t seem like a legitimate piece. What kind of front site did it have–post or ramp?

Al,

Due to the passage of the NFA of 1934, it was not legal to manufacture a "rifle" with a barrel shorter than 16-inches. Winchester ceased production of the Trapper Model 92s and Model 94s with the 14 and 15 inch barrels at that time. I have strong doubts about the Madis letter being accurate. The BATF issued the exemption letter, so it is a moot issue now about its legality.

guys, my mistake. The carbine in question has a 16" barrel, not 15" I got it confused with another older 15" carbine that he has with the ATF and Madis letter. Sorry for the confusion. old age I guess.

Thanks,

Al
