Can someone explain the logic of this switch?
The 1873 in the photos is part of the up coming RIA auction. The s/n # of the 73 is 223037B. A s/n search for this rifle is shown below. Why would the lower tang be taken off the rifle in the s/n search, ( which would be a nice rifle ) and be put on what is supposed to be a 22" OB, FM rifle? Now the 30" OB, FM, Set Trigger, Casehardened Receiver gun has a s/n that will not letter correctly.

It may not of been switched. The barrel has been shortened from what I can see. Better pictures are in order to tell anything more but its Rock Island so anything is possible.

These are the only photos that RIA had posted for this lot. I am only interested in the 76 as a wall hanger but ran both s/n’s through Cody. Maybe the s/n they listed for the 73 wasn’t right. Like you said, it’s Rock Island. 🙄

6-6-13___Just went through Madis’s book and even the poor quality photos of rifles with set triggers, you can still set the set screw which does not show on this rifle. If the s/n is correct on the tang, maybe the set trigger was removed. Is this possible without a lot of work?

The set screw may have been broken off or maybe missing entirely. What I also find odd is the 73’s buttplate. Looks like it belongs on a early Henry. Someone probably ground off the top profile of the butt. Or RIA’s photoshop guy got a little to happy when cropping the photo.

That 73 got some issues to say the least.

Sincerely,
Maverick

With all these things that don’t add up on the 73, that is probably why they paired it up with the 76 to get rid of it. The 73 will probably end up being a parts gun for someone.
