Is a model 94, serial #1380xxx (sorry, that’s all of the number I have) too early to have the left side of the receiver drilled and tapped for receiver sights? It sure looks factory. I have a picrure but not sure how to post it.

Thanks,

Al

Pretty sure they are after the fact and not factory. Big Larry

Al,

The serial number you mention indicates that it is a Flat-band carbine manufactured in 1946 . Winchester did not begin drilling and tapping the Model 94 as a standard feature until several years later (1952). That stated, it could have been special ordered as early as 1934. If you can send me a clear close-up picture of the holes, I can usually identify factory work versus the local gun smith’s handy-work. [email protected]

Thanks Larry and Bert. Bert, I’ll email you a picture.
I have a model 94, serial #1731479 that has the receiver sight screws. Could this be original? I’ll send you a picture of this as well.

My carbine closest to yours is # 1921852 (1953). It has the two receiver holes, short wood, and serrated hammer. All the late pre 1964 features. Big Larry

Bert,

I’m curious. When Winchester began tapping the receiver, did they also shorten the forearm at the exact same time? Does any carbine in your survey have the holes drilled but long forearm….or vice versa?

Lon,

The switch from the long forend to the short forend stock occurred in the 1745000 – 1753000 serial number range, before the change to the drilled & tapped holes in the receiver took place (in the 1906400 – 1926800 serial range).

Interesting.

Don’t think I’ve run across a short stock forend without the taps. Good info sir.

Lon,

I have surveyed several hundred of them that have the short forend stock, but are not drilled & tapped on the receiver.
