I am looking at a model 62A SR:429935. My search of serial numbers states that this model finished production in 1958 around serial number 409000. So how come the serial number on this rifle I am looking at is well above the production number? Is it a clean up of parts gun?

Graham,
According to data in Ned Schwing’s book the last Model 62A serial number produced during 1959 was 412022, supposedly the end of production. That puts your rifle about 18,000 rifles later. That would be equivalent to about 18 months worth of production at the rate they were made during 1957 and 1958.
The PM did not come through for some reason. Email me at [email protected]

There is another angle to consider in this topic.
When Ned Schwing did his research for the books he wrote on the 22 caliber slide-action rifle series, he quite apparently did not find 100% of the factory Polishing Room (serialization) records.
Specifically, for the Model 90, his tables end in the 780,000 range. For some unknown reason, he did not find any of the later PR records. When I went digging through those records (about eight years ago), I discovered that the Model 90 serial number records were intact all the way out through serial number 857747 (November 23rd, 1949). It is entirely possible that there were more Model 62A rifles made than what Ned found records for.

I just picked up a Winchester model 62A with serial number 854495 and thanks to Bert, the PR date is July 1942.
Further, the serial number on the barrel assembly is followed by a "B". Barrel is marked 62A, it has the model 62A coiled hammer spring and the top tang is plain with no hole for a tang sight.
