G’day Michael I found this to late to get the full serial number as it sold first thing but I’m dubious as to if it’s a genuine Model 65 as the serial is in the 847 000 serial range

Hello Dallas,

Good to hear from you. That is most definitely not an original Model 65. It is interesting that he calls it a 65 because the upper tang would be stamp "MODEL 1892" on the top line during that serial number range. 1918 DOM for the receiver and the Model 65 was not introduced until 1933.

I am amazed at how many M1892 rifles I come across with M65 barrels on them considering the very small production number of the Model 65. I have limited access to viewing Winchesters in my area and I still seem to run into these now and again. Its a shame that so many of them were butchered. I guess it just makes me feel better about the M65 218 Bee I have in my safe. Its one of my favorites.

Bruce,

Got the PM and replied. And thank you for your kind words. It really is fun to do. But it does eat up a LOT of time.

Michael,
I assume you checked out the 1892 Winchesters in Little John’s auction coming up later this month. At least he gives the complete serial numbers.

Thanks Don.

Yes,  I had seen that.  I wonder who did the work almost 20 years ago?

I recently acquired a very poor ’92 SRC in .44WCF as “refurb project” for $75 let me know what you need off it.
