Today was a very good day!

Back during December while I was nearing the end of 4 months in Italy I was contacted by a gentleman who had come across a link to the survey I was working on. He wanted to know if I was still at it and would I be interested in adding his collection to the effort. I quickly set my glass of Chianti down and replied that I would absolutely love to get the information. I forwarded some reference material and a blank spread sheet for him to use. Today…. I open my gmail account and he had finally found the time to go through the rifles and enter all the info and send it to me. Not a small task considering that there were 28 rifles listed!! I am still going over the list and seeing how they fit. This now puts me at 4,572 rifles in the effort.

A lot of his rifles are from Australia and he most certainly has a "thing" for half magazine configurations. Thanks so much!

That’s pretty cool Michael. Looks like everything and the kitchen sink! Those pictures are also an excellent comparison of various stock color.

Nothing like a nice cool Texas summer evening of 96 degrees to make you sit at the computer and put together a long post for helping others to identify what is needed for my survey of the 1892’s . I am 19 rifles short of 500 right now. Hopefully this effort will gat me a couple hundred more.

Hello,

This goes under "enquirering minds want to know". I have just added yet another column in my survey of the 1892 regarding whether the hammer and lever are CAse colored or blued on the rifles. If yo uhave sent me information on your rifle(s) so far please also now send me the SN and what the finish is on these parts. I will add it into my work and also go back through the photo files of over 1000 rifles and add it into the work.

Thanks so much because I had so much free time on my hands and really nothing to do!
Michael

Here’s a few pics of the one I kept. Not a high condition gun, but I liked the configuration, and it has a really nice bore, which I didn’t expect. Someone has done some cleaning on it over the years. Sorry about the marginal pictures.

The second one, ( the one in the photos) is a crescent butt. The angle of one of the pics almost looks like a shotgun butt. And yes the first one was from GB, the other one was from a local gunshow.

Gary,

I had the take down rifle in my survey already from when it was for sale on GB and at that time it had a shotgun butt on it. (?) That is why I questioned it.

Type 2 tang stamp

Full Magazine Tube

How would I know if it is a 1904 production gun?

Hello Roy,

Based on the serialization records the rifle is definitely a 1904 production rifle. You can contact the Cody Firearms Museum and request a Factory Letter which will verify the exact serialization date and the date the rifle entered and was shipped from the warehouse in addition to the original configuration.

G’day, Twobit here is a 32-20 15” carbine #759767 in South Australia.
There is also plenty of other 1892’s on this site.

Hello Dallas,

I look at that site quite often. I just wish they had more and better photos. The butt stock is either cracked or badly sanded along the lower tang on that trapper.

Thanks so much
Michael
