Hi guys,
I purchased a quite nice and fairly rare 1892 from the past Julia’s auction. The rifle had been owned by Tommy Rholes from the Dallas area from whom I had purchased my first three Model 1892 rifles which got me going on this addiction. The rifle is also pictured on the top of page 367 in Madis’s big brown book in my 1985 edition. Included with the rifle was a 3×5 card from the Winchester Gun Library dated June 3 1975 from T.E. Hall, curator to Tommy which details the information contained in the factory ledgers.
If some of you have earlier edition of Madis’s book could you please see if the rifle is featured and what edition do you have. I am trying to establish when Mr Rholes may have purchased the gun.
Thanks for your help
Michael

The 1979 copyrighted edition that I just looked at has the Model 1892 title page on page 367. However on Page 373, a rare, short 22" octagonal barreled rifle (serial no. 173210) with extra wood, shotgun butt and sling ring is pictured and credited to Tommy.

Same as the 1977 copyrighted edition, but with title page on page 369.
Thanks to both Rick and Old Colts. I know Tommy Rholes had the rifle by 1975 since he acquired information from Winchester. I am hoping somebody has pre 1975 copyright copies of the Brown Book and is the rifle shown in it.
Thanks

I received a PM that states the rifle is not mentioned in the 4th printing from 1966. If anyone has a printing of the book between 1966 and 1979 could you check the Model 1892 section for a photo and reference to SN 173210.
Thanks

The editions I have.
1985 – same as you
1st Ed. 8th Printing – copyrights 1961 & 1969. No mention of #173210.
1st Ed. 2nd Printing – copyrights 1961 & 1963. No mention of #173210
1st Edition copyright 1961. No mention of #173210.
So sometime between 1971 & 1975 Mr. Rholes meet Madis and his 92 was included in the Winchester Book. Now that doesn’t mean that he didn’t own the rifle before that date or year.
Of the three earlier editions of I have Mr. Rholes is not mentioned in the Winchester book in the list of individuals that contributed from their collection to the book. In the 1985 Edition Mr. Rholes is listed as "Tom Rholes"

In your 1971 edition is Mr. Rholes listed at the front of the book as having contributed to the book?

Is there an edition before 1961? As you mentioned 1955, I didn’t think or know of there being an edition before 1961. Do you know of and edition before 1955 as a fact or laid your hands on one?
Added to my post : http://www.georgemadis.com states first edition in 1961.

There is no 1955 edition. That is just right next to 1966 on my fat finger keyboard!!
Thanks guys for filling in the blanks. My guess is that Tommy acquired the rifle in early 1975 which is when he received the 3×5 card from the Winchester Museum stating the configuration of the rifle.
