Wondering if anyone can send or post a pic of a Winchester 1873 1st model dust cover ?.I have a first model rifle and am looking for a dust cover and think I’ve found one but not sure of thumb print as I’m told there are a couple dif styles.Any help would be great !.My rifle has serial # just below 20,000.
Thanks !
It should look like this. They changed the style of the oval though the production. The early guns had a more round thumbprint.

A good original dust cover is harder to find than a buttplate or wood so I wouldn’t pass up a dust cover

Forearm wood is easy to find for a first model because you can use wood from any era. You just need to match up to the barrel size.

If your gun is below 20,000 it should need a 1st model dust cover.

Truns out it was a 2nd model dust cover.I still not having any luck find the butplate and forend. I really want to use the old girl on my deer hunt this fall but unless I find these 2 items it wont happen !
I would let that hold you up from hunting with it. You can shot it without a dust cover, it was a common practice to remove the covers because it caused jams or get a repo and you can always resell it when you find the the real one. Then get a long tang buttplate and put it on. You can always find the correct first model butt plate later. You don’t need forearm wood either. It will look just like a gun used in old cowboy movies when they wanted to look like a Henry.

If I can find an aftermarket plate I’ll use it the way it is without the forend. All the plates I’m finding have the short top tang and I need the long tang.I’ve spent hrs and hrs on the net and nothing that I can see. I think later I’ll get a shotgun but for hunting and keep the original for show so I know nothing will happen to it !
There are 2 on Ebay right now.

I know when I was selling a bunch of sights this spring, I first was only selling to USA only and had a guy contact me through Ebay from Canada asking to bid. My problem was I couldn’t change the listing once it was listed, even had Ebay support phone and they still couldn’t get a Canadian bid to bid. New listings worked.

This is my rifle. It is too early for your gun, but this is what first models looked like up to about 2600. A few scattered have been found up to 2700. I own probably the last raised cover at serial #2703 on my carbine. Thought it would be fun to show.
