Hello All,
During the most recent Board of Directors meeting, it was voted on and approved to upgrade, update, and improve the function and features of the WACA website, including the forums.
I am asking for ideas and suggestions from all of the regular users of the forums. Please post your thoughts and ideas on how we can improve the functionability and features of the forums.
Already on the list of improvements is an increase in the server space and bandwidth to allow direct up loading of pictures on the forums for those who are active WACA members.
Please provide your inputs within the next 7-days so that I can provide them to the website development team.

Maybe it is just me because I am not real good with computers but, if I try to do a search on a certain subject, I get 1500 hits and most are not related to the subject I entered. I have talked with other members and they have had the same kind of results. Is it me or the system?
Paul
I agree with Paul. There needs to be a better type of search engine used for the forum or it needs to be overhauled or something. Being able to search for a past topic is one of the most annoying things on this forum.
Other than that I don’t have to many other complaints and am very satisfied with the forum.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Ill jump on with the others with regards to the search function………..tried it a few times with poor luck. Honestly the picture hosting changes will be the best improvement. I know I will be more inclined to share pics if a few steps were removed. Discussions are always more interesting with good pictures.
Thanks for yours and Robs efforts so far,
Gary

One thing I would like to see is a way to subscribe to a topic area like "Winchester Rifles or Whats New" so you can receive a email alert of a new thread. You would just get one email when someone posts a new thread. You could add it to the persons Profile where he would select which areas he wants to notified.
The search could be improved by displaying a small section of the search results that contain your search terms right now you only get the first so many characters .
I do would also like to see the site host its own photos because then there would be some control over the size of them and the site could limit the maximum width so we don’t end up scrolling left and right to read a thread.

Are we allowed to make suggestions/coments about how the forum is run with no fear of retaliation or being thrown off the forum? Peter
Peter,
Any "reasonable" suggestion is allowed. However, if you are simply making a complaint about someone, then No, you are not allowed to do so, especially if you are not a WACA member. This website is owned and operated by the WACA for the benefit of its members. Non WACA members will in the near future only be allowed a 60-day "Guest" login, and will not be allowed to post pictures. In order to continue using the WACA forums beyond the 60-day period, the "Guest" will need to become a paid WACA member.

Bob,
If I understand you correctly, instead of subscribing to an individual topic post (which you can currently do, and receive email notifications), you would like the option of subcribing to specific forum, and receive notifications for any new message?

I would still want to subscribe to the individual topic post but be able to subscribe to the a individual forum. In other words I would want to get a email notice that someone has started a new topic without having to check the site. I usually have my computer on at work or at home but if I’m busy and don’t check the site I might miss a interesting topic that started a while ago.

I agree with trying to keep the maximum width down automatically. I just caused that to happen recently by accident. I went in and edited the images down after realizing that but the format on my screen didn’t change afterwards. Looks like that page will always need to be scrolled left to right. You can always reduce the zoom option on your internet browser settings, but that will also shrink the writing on the screen I think.

Bert, So that I understand you correctly…if one is NOT a paid WACA member after the 60 days, one would still be able to view the forums etc, but not be able to log in, post replies, or post pictures etc. Is that correct, or will one not even be able to view the forum? Thanks, Peter

Try editing the original post with the "supersized" photos in it. Delete the original file and insert the new ink to the reduces size photo. If you saved the reduced size photo as a separate file it will not automatically be substituted.

I tried that and it didn’t seem to work, so I tried again. The scrolling left to right ended up being caused by a link to Google books I posted below the image, quite a lengthy one I guess. When I deleted the link all was good. Pasted it again and got the left to right scrolling deal again. So, no more link on that post.

would it be possible to pay a smaller fee to post on the forum but not join WACA?
If they had a level where you joined but had a membership level without any publications like the calendar or magazine just posting benefits. I don’t know how much the benefits cost WACA but its worth talking about to increase membership.

I think limiting access to the forum to non-paying members is a bad idea.
But also believe forking over $45 for membership isn’t that bad of a deal and it goes to a good organization.
But also believe this will drastically lower the forum’s traffic. Other types of organizations have done this with bad results.
Another thing I would like to see changed that other like organizations use on there forums. Every time I log in and out of the forum, if there are any un-read new posts it is highlighted when I enter the forum, but sometimes I don’t or can’t read all the new posts. If I haven’t read all of the posts and log out the next time I log IN the new posts are no longer highlighted for me and thus I have a hard time remembering or figuring out what are new and old posts.
On http://www.antiquereloadingtools.com/ there forum only de-highlights a post once you have read it. And posts stayed high-lighted no matter how many times you log in and out. I like this feature on there forum and wish WACA’s had the same feature.
Main reason being, normally I read the forum regularly and this isn’t a problem for me. But when I go out of town for a trip, when I log back in I can’t read all the new posts or sometimes I will get "timed out" of the forum. I think it would just be nicer.
The image hosting thing doesn’t bother me to much. But it would be nice to not have our posted images removed by the image hosting site that we use. I’m lucky I guess the site I use has never deleted any of my older posted images. But it is nice to look back at old posts every once in a while and not have the image removed by the hosting website. Because basically now that entire thread / topic post is useless.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Larry,
The annual membership fee is just $45, and you get (4) magazines and a beautiful calendar each year in addition to full access to the WACA website. If you sign up for a 3-year or a 5-year membership, the cost per year goes down.
