Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items

Back

W859 VERY INTERESTING WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SRC

Item # W859

This gun appears to have been hit on the buttplate by a bullet. There is a chip out of the stock that has been replaced. Also a big chip out of the buttplate measuring about 3/4" X 1/2". A bullet is the only logical explanation. The repair was done in a crude fashion and has since aged considerably. Overall metal is an aged plum/brown patina. Some pin prick rust here and there. Traces of blue in protected areas. Dark bore would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct dust cover. Buttstock is pretty much sound except where the repair has been made. Late markings. Correct ladder rear sight. Very interesting Western type gun that I’m sure saw some action!

The old "this gun was shot with a bullet syndrome" aye! This story is as old as the civil war. Strike that, Revolutionary war! And is about as common as the old confederate or union belt buckle that is "shot with a bullet" and saved the solider’s life. Most of the time the "magical" JFK type bullet is still stuck in the buckle.

People do all sorts of stupid things with guns.

Sincerely,
Maverick

I remember being behind a guy in Vietnam when his rifle was shot out of his hands. The bullet cut the sling in two and bent the operating rod.It was an M14.Really got his attention and mine too!
