Here’s another verified factory cast off stock. This time its on an 1886. I could barely believe it the first time and now a third one has surfaced. Talk about one of a kind Winchesters.

Has anyone seen a pistol grip such as the one pictured on a Winchester 1886 before (or, 1892 or 1894, for that matter!). That pictured is more like that seen on a shotgun, such as an Ithaca or A H Fox. Is the stock original? Probably so, due to the difficulty of fabricating such a stock. But, maybe not???

The Cody letter states 1/4" more cast than standard, but the stock has at least 2" of cast??

I read the Winchester Letter as:

1/4" more cast off, and 1/2" more drop, than Sample Stock.

I would take that as being, Winchester might have made up a stock with less dimensions and the buyer needed more cast off and drop.

Enjoy the day.

That is what I would interpret also. For something as dramatic as this it is not hard to believe that a sample would have been sent in order to get it correct "the first time" instead of trial and multiple errors.

I believe that you fellows are correct. When I read the letter the first time, I mistakenly read "sample" as "standard".

What about the pistol grip? Have you ever seen one like this on a Winchester from that era? I have not.

Looks like a Standard Pistol Grip Stock to me, for that time period.

It just looks deceiving with the extra cast off and extra drop.

Or the Buyer might have had it made that way, being there are so many other options with that Winchester. Especially the Stock.

Enjoy the Day.

No, it looks more like a knob. There is no capped pistol grip or, on earlier firearms, the uncapped pistol grip with the ebony insert. I just have never seen an pistol grip like this one on a Winchester before.

It looks like the grip on the 1887 and 1893

Ok, Let me rephrase my answer.

Evidently, the buyer of that Winchester wanted the stock made that way.
Which I was referring to that time frame, not a ordinary Winchester Stock.
Lets face it it was a Special Order 1886 Winchester and that is what the original buyer wanted.

Enjoy the Day.

Merz had a 94 a while back with that same grip. He called it a bag grip. I think the stock had extra drop too.

Wow, congratulations on adding one more to the set…….absolutely unique examples of what Winchester would build for the customer.

I know this is an 11 year old thread, I’m slowly going through all 400 some pages to try and gain some knowledge from you all. Any way my question is does anyone think this rifle was made for a right handed person who was blind in their right eye allowing them to shoot right handed with their left eye?

Yes or left eye dominant. I have seen a couple custom stocks like this on trap and sporting clays shotguns. One man was blind in eye the other was eye dominant.

I wonder if the customer furnished the “sample”, to give Winchester an idea of what he wanted.

My father is lucky, he is left handed but right eye dominant. He shoots right handed with no issues and is basically ambidextrous. Most left handed folks can’t shoot right handed to save their life. I always enjoyed the actor Berry Pepper’s portrayal as the group’s sniper in the movie Saving Private Ryan.
