I am looking at a 1907 made about 1954, #54648. It has a 10 round magazine and steel butt plate. What is unusual is the the serial number is preceded by an I. It is not stamped separately, but part of the original number. Could this be a police model? Researching the 1907 I could not find reference to a letter preceding the serial number.

Were late 1907s drilled for a scope?

Police Models were made earlier.  The Police Model rear sight is in a dovetail mounted closer to the receiver than the Standard Model.  A bayonet attachment would also be found on that Model.  The Police Model 1907 is a rare rifle.  The 1907 was never drilled at the factory for scope mounts.  Leonard Speckin”s book Winchester Model 07 Self-Loading .351 Caliber is an excellent book on this interesting rifle, and cartridge.
