I’m looking at a flat side 30 us that has about a 22” barrel. It has a dovetail cut into the barrel for the front sight. I’m assuming if it was a special order short barrel from the factory that it would have the standard ramp style front sight. Am I correct in my assumption that this barrel has been chopped by someone after it left the factory? If so how hard would it be to find a replacement full length barrel to restore it back to original configuration?

Being a flat side, factory record should be available and tell the real truth. The odds are, however, it was cut. Now as to replacing the barrel–doing so with a Winchester original with proper markings and extractor cut will be a significant challenge. The extractor is located differently than the second version so only flat side barrels will work. Getting a new barrel made with the proper markings plus the proper location for the extractor? Best ask Mark Douglas on that. Tim

I’m with Tim, most likely cut down, the records will tell, and if cut down, walk away and wait for a better one
