I bought this 1894 38-55 with a round barrel, 2/3 magazine, and shotgun butt a few months ago at a local gun show and am just now finding the time to share photos. Even though the gun is a solid 80-85% condition, the unusual Cody letter was the final selling point for me. All my other lettered Winchesters don’t provide any details of any R&R’s, but this one does! Does a detailed R&R as this add any value to the whole package on an 1894?
Thanks,
Don

Looks to me like it may have never been shipped in it’s original conformation. Possible scenario is that it remained unsold for a couple of years for whatever reason and was R&R’d to the present conformation. Interesting but hard to place a value on.

That photo of the the top tang makes me think it had a tang site at one time. Did you take it off? Or still have it?

Hi Maverick,
I think you’re right that it did have a tang sight on it at one time. The gun is in the exact configuration as I purchased it (with no tang sight). If I could find a period correct Lyman in matching condition, it would sure spruce it up some wouldn’t it?

I have this one where the letter provides the details of the R&R. I don’t think it’s a very common occurrence though.Al
That’s a beautiful rifle Al–and an antique to boot. I remember drooling over that one when Collectors Firearms had it for sale.
I did the same. I watched it for almost two years before I decided to pull the trigger. They are great to deal with.
