I have the opportunity to purchase a 1894 Rifle that has a 4 Digit Serial number in 25-35 through an auction. By this site, this rifle would be a 1895 year production.

IMHO, the rifle is in good to very good condition. The receiver is turning a brown and the barrel looks like it maintains about 70% of the original blue with some minor pitting. It appears that the magazine tube was either replaced or refinished and the hammer appear to be refinished or replaced. The endcap has been replaced and clearly has a case hardened finish.

The stock and forearm appear to be original in finish and the wood appears to have some figure qualities.  This is standard rifle, not a takedown, semi Deluxe or Deluxe.

What value would you place on this rifle with the information provided.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

We (I) need to see several clear pictures of it.

I attempted to add a link of teh pictures from the auction.  It does not look like the reply has been added to this string?

In my novice opinion there aren’t enough pictures, can’t see muzzle, screws(At least on my I pad I can’t).1700 seems high for something with a bunch of refinished and possibly replaced parts.maybe because it’s an antique. Again just my novice opinion.

I appreciate all of the input.  I guess I am out on this one based upon the input.

I bought my wife a 9422M XTR that was new in the box in 2012.  I inherited my grandfathers 1894 SRC in 32 Winchester Special this year.  This one was made in 1910 by this site.

Here are three more I am following in an auction the following weekend.  The last is a 1892. All are take downs.

Like to get my wife another rifle that is also a collector.  Whatever we get, will be an occasional shooter.

Again, many thanks for your input!

I looked at the fancy 25-20.  Not perfect but a desirable gun.  I would like it if it were an antique and even better if it were one of the large calibers.  The other guns I did not pick them up.

I appreciate the input.  I am trying to determine what the real value of these rifles are if there was no mark up and then back into the number.  I agree, the 20% premium is crazy.  Again, many thanks!

Does the 1892 look like it has been refinished?  It is in very good shape by the pictures provided.  I would pass on it if it is not original.  I was looking for a shooter for my wife.  She has a 9422MXTR she enjoys shooting.  I have my grandfathers model 23B Savage in 25-20, which my wife enjoys shooting.  Would like to get a collector lever for her in that caliber.  The 25-35 would be for me.  Like the 32 Winchester Special as well.

Terry first of all I pay by cash or check so the premium is 15%.  I make sure I don’t over bid initially so the total out of my pocket is not out of hand.

The 1892 is an honest gun and has not been refinished.  I am going to the preview this week and could take a closer look at it.

I went to the preview today and looked at the 92 again but I did forget to look at the bore.  The worst spot on the gun is along the top on the left side of the receiver.  You can see this on picture 5 of the online catalog.  This gun is, in my opinion, all original.  It will bring a premium because of the deluxe status.  This has far more value than just a shooter.  A check at Cody would tell you the rest.

I genuinely appreciate the feedback! I am looking at this rifle for my wife and as an investment.  She does not shoot a great deal, however, I have my grandfathers savage 23B in 25-20 and she manages to shoot that rifle with no problem.

I appreciate your careful attention to detail and will see where the auction takes the price.  Need to have some “meat” on the bone after the deal is done, so I have my limits, however this rifle, with your input, definably perks my interest!

It peaked my attention too.  Deluxe 92’s are hard to find.  The 25’s and 32’s show up but the 38’s and the 44’s are some of the most hard to find Winchesters there are.  I think we discussed a 38 sometime last year.

Thank you for the response! They are hard to find.  I am more of a 94 collector, but was looking for light caliber rifle for my wife.  The 25’s and the 32’s appear to be more common that the larger calibers.  Have not done a lot of research on the 92’s so this is somewhat of a new venue for me. I don’t think it was me last year that you discussed the 38 with, but I genuinely appreciate the input on this one!  I will keep you posted.  I think that this one will probably bid outside my comfort level of what I can spend, but, time will tell.  Auction is on Sunday!

I can see that the .25-20 under discussion is a decent rifle.  I would be very surprised if the winning bidder ends up with any meat left on the bone.

The 1892 under discussion here has been described as a ‘deluxe’. I realise this is a collector term only.

It appears to have straight grain walnut to me and not ‘deluxe’ grade walnut. Is it a Fancy Sporting Rifle, ‘Deluxe’ or ‘Semi-deluxe’? Or is it a sporting rifle with a couple of special order features?
