I picked up a model 1894 30 W.C.F. semi-deluxe yesterday that I had bought on a online auction. It has a nice brown patina and the checkering is worn some but I really like it’s overall look. I’m not a true collector. I just like hunting with old sporting rifles and shotguns. The rifle looks like it wore a tang sight and a original rear sight for a long time, but it also looks like the layman receiver sight has been on the for some time. The Cody sheet also came with it. Would a Winchester letter tell me anymore than the Cody sheet? I also wonder what the repair was?
Interesting and handsome looking old rifle.
In answer to your question, No, a CFM factory letter will not have any additional details about the configuration of that rifle. The worksheet information is used to create the letter.
In regards to the Repair and Return noted, I highly suspect that nothing was actually repaired, as it was returned less than two weeks after it originally shipped. I suspect that it was returned to have the Lyman front and rear sights installed.
In regards to the sights on it now, the front sight is a Marbles, and the “Lyman rear” was most likely a No. 1 tang sight. I am of the reasonably strong opinion that the Lyman No. 21 receiver sight was added well after the fact. One other item that is not original is the magazine tube end cap… it should be slotted. The smooth (non-slotted) end caps were not introduced until 1948.

Thanks Bert!
I really like the Marble front sight so it will probably stay, but I may go with a layman no.1 and maybe a blank for the barrel. I just shoot the peep sights better than the buckhorns. The rifle has a nice bore and should make a nice hunting rifle.
Thanks

Nice rifle. Any that I’ve had with a lettered Lyman receiver sight(pre 1900) all had a tiny brass bead at the 100 & 200yd elevation. The two I have that are not lettered & post 1900 have no bead & were not factory installed. Maybe Clarence or Bert know more on this.RickC
Thanks the info Rick!

Well here’s one I’ve had for some time and it’s the only ’94 I’ve lettered that does not mention the caliber, which is 30WCF. Neither does the letter mention the sling buttons, which I believe are original to the gun , and yes that is an original Winchester sling, the tang sight I believe has been added

For my education, what makes you think the Lyman rear was added later? I’m not doubting just interested.
That’s one of those times You need to be havin’ the gun in hand , from My pics it’s hard to tell. The finish in the sight is much fresher than the tang it’s mounted on.

Chuck,
The condition of the upper tang clearly shows that it had a tang sight mounted on it for a long time. Additionally, there are no visible wear marks on the side of the receiver from the Lyman No. 21, and the screw that would ordinarily be covered by lower section of the sight has a mangled slot. It also appears this rifle had a barrel mount rear sight on it for awhile… note the wear spots on the top flat of the barrel behind the dovertail slot. This rifle has had its sights altered several times during its past. The Lyman No. 21 is simply the latest chapter in the saga.
