My position on the "opening bid" is that you are paying $2500 for a set trigger and an extremely rare configuration because of that.  Without the trigger it's a $2500 rifle at best.

That was my thought as well... (8) full boxes of .351 WSL factory ammo is easily worth the $400 price tag.  You essentially got that rifle for $0 (free)! The 10-round magazine is worth $250 all by itself.

Hello all,
We are fairly familiar when there is a bit of time between the serial number application date and when the actual fully assembled rifle finally made it into the warehouse and subsequently shipped out.  This example popped up on Gunbroker this morning.  The receiver was serialized on October 31, 1905 but it took almost 11 years before the receiver was used to make up the full rifle and was shipped out the next day.  The fact that the SRC has a set trigger may have something to do with this.  So far I have found 141 Model 1892 rifles with set triggers.  ONLY 8 of those are SRC or carbine configurations so they are definitely rare.  When I first saw the SN and then the fact that the caliber stamp and barrel address stamp were both on the left side of the barrel versus being located on the top of the barrel something did not fit.  Thankfully a copy of the letter proved the time lag.  The location of the caliber stamp is also VERY unique being below and forward of the rear sight dovetail versus behind it.  https://www.gunbroker.com/Item/1198728119

How many have you documented with this forward caliber stamping? I have never seen one.

To me this 85 says a lot about Winchesters Quality control, that we don't see today. IMO!

This is the rifle and it is a 30 U.S. (a.k.a. 30-40 Krag).  I put the Lyman No. 103 Micrometer tang sight on it.  It never had a rear sight on it.

It has two repairs (R&R) listed in letter, it may have been trigger problems, and was replaced
