A question for Bert. I acquired this real nice 1894 extra light rifle with full magazine chambered in 32-40. I love the look of these pencil barrels with full magazines. I have not seen many many extra lights in 32-40 and was wondering if you had any estimated production numbers extrapolated from your 1894 survey.
Thanks,
Don
Don,
The first thing to keep in mind, is that my survey only covers the non-letterable guns (serial range 354000 – 1079689). In that range, I have thus far surveyed 9,720 Model 1894s. Of that number, just 120 of them are ELWs (2.9%). Of the 120 ELWs, just 7 of them are 32-40s (5.8%).
If my survey numbers are an accurate representation of the total, the numbers work out as follows;
1079689 – 353999 = 725,960 (total Model 1894s in survey serial range)
120 / 9,720 = 1.23% (surveyed ELW production percentage)
725,960 x 1.23% = 8,926 (extrapolated total ELWs in serial range)
8,926 x 5.8% = 518 (extrapolated ELWs in caliber 32-40).
This does not include the unknow number of 32-40 ELWs in the letterable range like your rifle. However, we do know (from the ARMAX document) that 40,023 of the first 353,999 Model 1894s were 32-40s. If we assume that 1.23% of the 353,999 were ELWs (4,354), and that 5.8% were 32-40s, that would indicate that another 253 32-40 ELWs may exist, bringing the total to approximately 770.
