I just bought an 1894 SRC, made 1908. The wood fits perfectly, with long forearm. It looks its age. But it has a checkered steel flat butt plate original to the wood.  When did they start offering a checkered steel flat butt plate.

Winchester introduced the checkered steel butt plate on the Model 1887 lever-action shotgun.  It became an optional (special order) butt plate for all of the lever-action models about the time that the Model 1887 was being phased out.  Winchester made it the standard butt plate on the Model 1897 shotguns (phasing out the smooth steel plates) beginning in January 1904, but later phased it out with the hard rubber plate.  The next time Winchester used it as standard was in the early 1930s (on the Models 64, 65, 71, and 70).  It was used on the Model 1894 (a special order option) from the late 1890s through the mid 1920s (replaced by the Model 55 style serrated steel butt plate).

In my ongoing survey of the Model 1894, I have documented (97) rifles & carbines with a checkered steel shotgun butt (s/n range 353999 – 1079670).  What is the serial number on your SRC?

Your special order SRC was actually manufactured March 4th, 1910 per the Winchester factory records.

S/N 450810 is another SRC with a factory installed checkered steel butt plate, a 25-35 WCF with a factory 3-leaf express rear sight.

Which caliber is your SRC?

Interesting… both guns were very likely on the same order.  Does your SRC have a 3-leaf express rear sight?

It was replaced with a Marbles rear sight.

The odds are better than 50/50 that it had a 3-leaf express sight on it when it left the Winchester factory.
