Being more of an 1894 collector, I’m not sure how “rare” the 1892 short rifles are but this one’s got some special order features and looks to be in real nice condition.  The asking price seams pretty reasonable to me.

Michael can likely confirm, but chances are you will likely never come across another short rifle configured like that in a 38-40.  I may be a little biased, I have a preference for the 1892’s rifles in 38-40 because it has always seemed to me that special order features are more commonly found on the smaller caliber rifles and in the 44-40, but less commonly on the 38-40.  Just my 2 cents.

New to the 1892 and trying to educate myself – Question: This gun seems to be an exceptional example with unique features, etc. Curious as to why it hasn’t sold? Price? Seems like a reasonable price to me considering the rarity and condition…..

I have wondered that also. I am a bit hesitant because of the seller. I have dealt with him in the long ago past and I did not like what I was sent after buying a gun. He took it back, but who needs a hassle.

Glad it found a good home–congrats!  I had a hunch you would snatch this one up.  From what I’ve seen, it should have lots of company.  Did I mention the finder’s fee? ?

How many beers do I owe you Don??  I actually start every day looking for 1892’s to add to my survey data.  Here in Texas that starting time is usually some place between 5 and 6 in the morning.  I have 4 or 5 other 22 inch Model 1892’s and emailed Bill when I saw the add at 6:30 am on the 31st of Dec. telling him I would buy it.  The only catch was I was at my ranch and the check book was in Houston and I would not be there until the 2nd of Jan.  He actually shipped the rifle to me before I even wrote the check!!!

And thanks for the kind words from the other guys.   I will post some pics of all of them together

Michael,

That is a really nice rifle with some rare features and a very good price, in my opinion. You were smart by jumping on that one quick.  If I had the money set aside I would have done the same.  I was just joking about the finders fee.  Looking forward to the pics.  You have quite the collection of 1892’s.

Good morning Don,

I didn’t have the money set aside.  I am selling a Model 61 and a 94 to hopefully cover most of the cost.  I am “trying” to keep my Collecting investment at a neutral point right now.  After buying lots of rifles I will be exchanging some current inventory for any new purchases.   And I am always happy to have a cold one if you find yourself in Houston.
