I picked up a nice model 1892 round barrel rifle in 44WCF. The serial is 325302. According to the Winchester book the manf. date is 1906. Are the 1892’s like the 1894’s in that the dates are off? For example I have a 38-55 serial 82701 that the book places at 1897 but I’m told it’s 1900 or so.
Yes, the Model 1892 serial numbers are almost as far off as the Model 1894 in the early years, then they catch up and get close, and then they drift off again in later years.
Model 1894 serial number 82701 went through the Polishing Room in Janaury of the year 1900
Model 1892 serial number 325302 went through the Polishing Room in January of the year 1906.

Congrats on the ‘new’ rifle! I am conducting a survey of the 1892’s and would love to add your to my effort. Could you please post or send me some photos of the stamped writing on the gun? You can read a bit here:

Thank you Bert! Does the serial issue occur with 1885’s?
Yes… and very grossly inaccurate in the later years.
Most serial number lists show that serial 103351 was manufactured in the year 1913… the actual year of manufacture was 1906.
The list below is the actual year ending serial numbers for the years listed;
1898 — 82492
1899 — 85257
1900 — 88302
1901 — 91733
1902 — 94738
1903 — 96553
1904 — 98953
1905 — 102084
1906 — 104603
1907 — 107063
1908 — 108004
1909 — 109327
1910 — 110870
1911 — 112555
1912 — 113267
1913 — 114726
1914 (May 26th) — 115308

Unless something has changed, I was under the impression that serial number info for the 1892 was from # 1 to 379,999. I can’t seem to find where to see the list of available serial number ranges for the different Winchester models. Am I wrong about this or have they found newer records for the 1892?
Paul
When I said info, I was referring to warehouse records that would have the details about a specific rifle. The SNA records for the 1892 are available from # 1 to 917,240 and # 1,006,822 to 1,007,608. This is based on the last breakdown of s/n availability for different models that I have.
When I first wrote to the Cody Museum about getting letters they replied that "Only the Serial Number Application (SNA) date letters are available on the two Model 1892s". So it appears they have some information on the high serial numbers? Perhaps SNA is not manufacture date? I have emailed Jesi at Cody in hope of getting a more accurate letter on the 1913 rifle.
Also got a letter on an 1886 serial 78730 – it lettered I believe correctly as 1893.
Tranter45,
You will only be able to get the serialization date for both rifles you own. There is no production ledger information available after SN 379,999. Can I please get photos of all the stamped writing on both rifle so that I can add them into my survey?

Hello Ned,
Yes 1910 is correct for your rifle. Serial number 543474 was just for auction at RIA this past June. Can you tell me the caliber and configuration of your rifle so that I can add it into my survey of the Model 1892’s which I am working on?
Thanks

About a year ago I posted in this thread that my 1892 made about 1913 lettered as 1893.
I just received a very nice email from Jessica Bennett from the Buffalo Bill Centre. My email questioning this letter had been misplaced – just found and she sent the following message:
I am sending you a corrected letter on SN 702780. The year on that one is an outright typo. It should have read 1913. I’ll get that letter in the post tomorrow.
Thanks Jessie.
I would also like to thank Rick Hill just for being a good guy. A while back I was about to pay big $$ for an 1886 in 45/70 with a 26" barrel. Info is scarse this side of the big pond so I contacted Rick – he checked and found it left the factory as a 38/56 with 24" barrel. Saved me getting burnt big time.
Thanks Rick.
