That is correct. On rifles, it is the exposed wood between the receiver and the cap. 7 3/8" for barrels less than 18", 8 3/8" for barrels from 18 to 22" and 9 3/8" for barrels 22" and longer with 1 known 18" barreled rifle having the 9 3/8" forearm.
