I recently acquired this 1886. The Cody Museum records only indicate the date the rifle shipped, no configuration information. By the serial number, the rifle appears to have been made in 1918. The Cody Records have the rifle shipping in 1920. I used The Winchester Book by Madis to understand the features to look for based upon the year of manufacture. I also used the Red Book to asses values, however, without a Cody Letter, I can only speculate on the originality of the configuration. The wear on the bluing looks like honest wear. This lightweight takedown has a lot going for it, if original, however, I will leave the opinions to the eagle eyes on this site. Much appreciate any input. Great shooter by the way. Action tight and smooth!
From the photographs provided, you appear to have an original, non refinished Winchester 1886 rifle with the takedown feature, as mentioned, and with an appropriate capped pistol grip. Your rifle would have been produced in 1920, as the polishing room records are accurate. Madis’ data is notoriously erroneous.
Can you post more photographs of your rifle showing views from either side, especially the receiver and wood?
Well I am certainly envious. Very envious. A few weeks ago we were discussing another .45-90 ELW that was on an internet auction. It sold very well. I wanted it, but would rather have yours. Here’s the link to the thread:

Oh my how soon we forget. Same one that was on GB. $10025.00
Tom – you sure called that right. For some reason, I had it in my head that the one on GB was a straight grip, so when I saw the pistol grip on this one, I thought it was a different rifle. I was a bit surprised to see two .45-90 ELW come along so quickly. Now I realize that didn’t happen
Not sure if this is considered an ELW, but did you guys see this one on Gunbroker?

It is not an ELW… the 26-inch barrel makes it a Sporting Rifle. All Model 1886 ELWs have a 22-inch barrel w/no dovetail for the front sight.

Super gun! The only thing I see is the lower tang doesn’t fit the slot in stock to the end correctly
I noticed the same thing, but I think it’s actually a shadow in the photo.
Don
That had been my initial impression as well – until I enlarged the photo – I believe Don is correct.

It is a nice gun all around. Only fit problem I see is it ain’t fitting in my safe. I was close but really felt that with my last bid it was already over the top dollar wise. But lovely gun in a super configuration. And Steve i am still cleaning the drool off my key board.
Sorry, just had to have this one! It was calling me. I do genuinly apprciate all of teh feedback. This one had me on the edge of my seat while bidding.
Many thanks again!
