I have an 1886 SRC made in 1898, and the case colors are strong. My untrained eye sees almost a gloss to the receiver. Not as strong as a Turnbull, but similar. Did Winchester put a finish coating over the case colors for protection, or a hunter a protective lacquer for extreme element conditions back in the era ? Maybe I’m seeing things that are not there ?
Where you have shellac it holds the color nicely but where its worn away the colors will seem faded. You don’t want to get too carried away cleaning the case colors if you have shellac over it. Just wipe it with a rag with oil. .
