Is there a picture of one somewhere so we can see what it looks like? Does Jim Gordon show an example?
Probably the most well known example would be 1 of 1000 serial #27,727. Which can be seen in several Wilson’s books and in one of the Gun Report Magazines. One interesting detail with it is that it was engraved by Ulrich and some of the engraving on the top of the receiver was covered up by the added dust cover rail.
They look exactly like 2nd models! And in reality I suppose that there is no difference, other than they occur in the same serial range as the open tops.
The same happens with the 76 Open Tops.

Maverick

Don’t some of these converted ones show “with lid” or “add lid” in the ledgers?

If I remember right 76’s did but I know the 73’s did say anything in the ledger.

Ok ; Thanks for all the info, I think I’m going to pass on them, if they were original guns I’d probably buy them.
Henry – that’s what I would do. They are a very cool and rare variation but the refinishing would just kill it for me. That no-finish rifle at the Morphy auction had a whole lot more appeal to me.
