There is a possibility that they are both legit. Also in rare circumstance you will find where an open top was made into a 2nd Model by the factory in this serial range.

Henry,
The pictures are not very good at all, i.e. bad lighting, blurred and bad angles. What we need is good clear pictures to see the top of the receivers to show the open top and the lower tang to see the serial numbers and how they fit the receiver. What I can tell you from the pictures provided is the metal and wood on both are refinished. The upper gun more than the lower one. The upper gun without the pin is going to be a earlier first model tang while the lower one is the second model transition tang.

To take good pictures of a gun you have to take pictures of one gun at a time and square up the the gun with the camera. You don’t want to shoot a picture at a angle since only one part of the gun is in focus. check your pictures for focus and blurring before uploading and retake them if they are bad. Lighting is the other problem people make is by using indoor lights that reflect harshly off one part of the gun causing bright spots making the other parts of the gun too dark to see detail. The best way is to take it outdoors and if its sunny go into the shade and place one gray cloth or on a unpainted wood surface.

No they are not many of them and they are worth more than a standard gun.

Is there a picture of one somewhere so we can see what it looks like? Does Jim Gordon show an example?
Gordons book should have pictures otherwise I have one. The factory did put covers on some of them.

Here is one that is fairly original just no finish which is going to be normal for a open top.

Open tops will have extra assemble numbers on the left side of both upper and lower tangs and a single digit stamped on the left side of the receiver just aft of the toggle link pin under the side plate.

Ser#27427 has assy#530 on top and bottom tang plus 191 on bottom tang and butt plate, #3 on the recv’r under left plate. Ser#27722 has assy’ #432 top and bottom tang plus #768 on bottom tang stock and butt plate, #3on the rev’r left side under plate. I just don’t know if I want to buy them or not, I’ve never had an open top ’73.

Just guessing at a value of them. The one that had more buffing could be worth $5500 the one that looks a little better is worth $6500. This is based on just a few pictures that I could see clearly.
