I was passed down a 94 Winchester short rifle with an 18 inch barrel. I’m trying to get some information regarding it’s scarcity, etc. I have looked at couple of 94 Winchester books but can’t really find out all that much about this. It was made in 1913, it’s a 32 Special caliber, is a takedown, has an octagon barrel, and is a pistol grip-fancy model. I collect antique guns but not really Winchesters. Anybody seen any others like this? It’s all original except for the tang sight. When I got it it had the screws for a tang sight but the sight was missing so I stuck a Marbles replacement on.

It looks to me like the length of the magazine tube from the muzzle to the magazine tube hanger is shorter than it should be. Also, there are two areas showing on the magazine tube where it rotated in the hanger. Sure looks like the barrel might have been shortened to its current length.
for comparison of the mag retaining band. First one is a 22" OB, FM, TD. s/n 137231 = 1-4-1902___
The other 2 are 20" short rifles.__ OB s/n 849277 = 4-03-1917,__ RB s/n 877932 = 5-23-1918.

[Image Can Not Be Found] [color=red:665ed110f4]The measurement from the muzzle should be 3 1/2" to center of mag band. corrected on 8-15-2013.[/color:665ed110f4]

I see exactly what you guys are saying. The weird thing is that I don’t see any indications that the mag tube was shortened. The front sight measures 1" from the muzzle to the center of the dovetail and the rear sight measures 4" from the center of the dovetail to the receiver face. Here are some more pics.

I would have to agree, the barrel does not look like it was cut,you can see the chamfer and the ware looks original and i don,t see how the mag tube could have been altered….Well if your looking for a grade and a value in my opinion the grade of the rifle is 35%-40% and the value if original is around $2500.00 if not original a little more than half that.

Thanks guys. I’m just trying to get some info on it. It was my wifes grandfathers gun and it’s really outside my collecting interest. Although I love pretty much anything that goes bang I collect mainly early guns. I bought the Renneburg (sp?) book but it didn’t help too much.

With 2 sets of wear marks on the mag tube and the location of the hanger I would say yes. Maybe they took a 22" TD and cut it down. The wood looks right and 22" rifles came with the 8 3/8" forearm. (not all but most). The hanger was placed the same place no matter what the barrel length was with a full magazine.

ps— ignore that measurement in the photo on my previous post for the hanger. It should have been 3 1/2" from the muzzle or 3 3/16" from the end of the mag tube to the front bottom edge of the hanger.
If you could post a photo of the dovetail for the magazine retaining band (less the retaining band) it may help determine whether it has been shortened or not. To remove the magazine retaining band just rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise. May also look at the milling marks on the front sight dovetail. Also, what is the measurement between the center of the rear sight dovetail and the takedown ring–4 inches or 5 inches?

A couple more shots for your viewing pleasure. So if it was shortened what length barrel do you think it was?
