Hey Bert, do you have sn156458 for my 1886?

JP

Yes we do have it… a standard Take Down 33 WCF rifle, 1/2 mag, HRSB.

Thanks for checking.  Currently, we have 1,269 of the final 14,000 Model 1886s documented (9.06%).  I also have the article for the WACA Collector magazine 99% complete and ready to publish.

Bert

Nice! Well I took the opportunity to take it apart anyways, glad I did, I knocked back some active rust at the takedown threads. Took a few pics I can PM if you want/need them…otherwise, what does HRSB stand for?

That serial number was not yet documented.  Is the lower tang marked with an “A” after the serial number?

Thanks,

Bert

Agreed, something about a hard copy and the great photos in our magazine. Bert and Mark put a lot of work into that article and it will be a reference for the 1886 collectors among us. Reminds me that I need to get set up to load and cast for the 33WCF.

Well, I know another local guy who has an extralight 1886 that would like a couple of those rounds! Laugh  My only 1886 right now, but I’m on the lookout for a nice older one too, but what am I NOT on the lookout for really….

Bert-

Here are two more that likely are not in your survey yet that are late ones in my collection.   Serial number 157576 it is an extra light take down .45-70 with a 22″ Nickel Steel bbl. no A after serial no.  1/2 mag  hard rubber shotgun butt.     Next one is serial number 158345  and it is a .33 Win.  take down  Nickel Steel bbl.  Shotgun butt  also no  A in serial no.

Thank very much!  Yes, both rifles are new entries in the survey.

Your 45-70 ELW is most likely a 1927 production rifle. It is in a group of rifles with Stainless Steel barrels (157530, 157581, 157598, and 157730).

Can you please check the barrels dates on both of these rifles?  It only requires a quick take down and an LED flashlight to see the 2-digit year number on the barrel.

Thanks for checking… I was dead on the money with the DOM for your ELW.  I suspect the 33 WCF Take Down will be either 27 or maybe 28.

Bert:

The late smokeless era research on the  1886 rifle in the Collector was first rate.

Glad my rifles were of some help in the research . Please keep up the good work; it is appreciated.

Bert-

I was able to look at  last at the  .33  Model 86 s/n 158345  and the bbl date on that one is 24-  Not what I expected it to be at all as late of a rifle as it is-  I guess that they were using up  parts on hand at this time .  It looks all correct and original to me-

Thanks,

Production of the Model 1886 was very slow (small quantities per year) after the year 1906.

Can you tell me which type marking is on the upper tang?  I suspect it will be a Type 4.
