Tom,
Thank you very much. Your Sporting Rifle was new for the survey. I have several others just like it in the same serial range, 1022494, 1023812, 1025536, and 1025681. Your Rifle should have a “28” marked barrel on it.

The serial number I high-lighted in red would make it a 1950s production Carbine… can you please check it.
Serial number 850056 is right in the middle of a batch of known Spruce Guns… does it have any unusual markings on it?
I had serial number 888607 (another Rifle) in my survey, so your rifle with 888608 is a sequential number in the survey.
Thanks for sharing the information for the research survey!

Bert, another “W” marked M94 for the survey, #1248940 standard carbine 32WS. It’s interesting I have “W” marked #1242437 also in 32WS, Which has the Winchester New Haven Conn Markings on the Loading Gate side while #1248940 has it on the left side like my other Pre war and post war examples. Any idea when that changed over in 1940?
I do not know when that change was made… I never thought to include it in my survey data fields. Thanks for the survey information.
Bert
Hi Bert. Big Larry here. I don’t know if it is of interest to you, but I have a pre-war M62 # 93239A, with a “W”. Big Larry

Bert, Made a Winchester hunt into Eastern New York state today and located a few new model 94s for the survey
#1215238 “W’ marked 30WCF type 6 tang DT long wood serrated
#1792743 30-30 Short wood, checkered
#2287486 30-30 Short wood, checkered
#1762243 32 WIN.SPL. short wood, checkered
Here are a couple photos of the Prewar “W” marked#1215238
quite a selection of sights to ruin an otherwise nice prewar 94.

M94 SN#1311921 (1941)Series 7 Tang w/ sight hole
Checkered hammer
55style Butteplate
Using the Red Book I estimate this Carbine was born Dec 18th 1941. I realize war was declared 12-7-41. Does the WCA consider my example a pre-war carbine?
Tom,
Yes, it is considered to be a “pre-war” Carbine. Pre-war production ended on August 23rd, 1942, which is the date that Winchester suspended production of the Model 94 to support the War efforts.
You did not mention which caliber your Carbine is?
