Got talked into this and i am pretty excited about it.  I want to create a data base for this model containing the following information for each rifle.   Full serial number; whether tang markings end with 1910 or 10; whether barrel address ends with 1906 or 1910; plain or fancy; front sight make and type; rear sight make and type; other information like presence of sling swivels, recoil pad and brand, inscribing/engraving, stock replacement, other modifications, etc.

Please note that there wasn’t much change in this model over the short time it was made but if someone thinks that i need to collect additional data then please let me know.  Of course, I will be happy to share this information with any members who ask.  Thanks!

John,

Do you happen to have this book by Leonard Speckin?

Al,

I do, along with a (rare) copy of Forgotten Winchesters by Henwood, although I’ve temporarily misplaced Speckin.

Congrats on taking the plunge John.  You will find the effort is very rewarding.  You will need to sign up to the Proxibid online auction site.  You will then get updates to upcoming Firearms auctions from all over the U.S.

Have fun

Thanks Michael.  Been signed up for Proxibid (or as I like to call it – the devil’s playground) for some time now.  Invaluable as well.  Starting to look at past auctions/sales on Google, Invaluable and Gunbroker.

Here is one.  You will want to do a Google search on the “Winchester 1910 SL” and troll through all kinds of old forum posts and sales.  You never know what you will find.  This is SN 191.  With foreign proof marks.    https://edelweissarms.com/winchester-model-1910-sl-sn-1xx/

I stayed up late the last couple of nights just to see what’s out there on the internet and I’ve got 79 entries so far.  Most of these are auctions or rifles for sale and many are missing some of the data that just wasn’t included in the ad or photos.   I am hoping as the word gets out, more private owners will respond and fill in the data gaps.  Thanks!  John

John,

It sounds like you are enjoying the hunt.  Yes you definitely need to prod some sellers for more information and additional photos to fill in the blanks.  You might also want to try posting a notice about your survey on other gun related forum boards to increase exposure.  That has worked some for me.  You may also get lucky finding somebody in Canada or Australia who might have time to some local looking for you.  I have almost 500 1892 from Australia in my survey.

John,

For the 1910 survey:

– serial #6897

– standard (plain)

– Lyman 1A 3rd variation tang sight and sporting rear barrel mounted sight, Lyman front blade sight (don’t know model)

– I did not remove tang sight to see tang markings

– I am not clear on what you are requesting regarding barrel address.  The address ends with Model 1910 followed by a series of patent dates, the last being July 5, 10.”

– hard rubber/plastic butt plate with Winchester  repeating Arms Co.logo

– no sling swivels, recoil pad or any other discriminators

Thank you for taking up the challenge.

Thanks Gregory,

Thanks Mac!  Some of the barrel addresses end in 1906.  Just wondering where that transition occurs.
