Steve,46 that I have found. One of which was just a tang on Ebay.
Bob
I could not remember if I had already posted my grandfathers rifle. I sent off for the letter, and got it back 2 weeks ago. My grandfather had passed away back in 2002, he supposedly had found this at a farm when he was 8 years old back in the mid 1920’s. The serial number for my 1873 is 515.
He moved all around the world with the Army Aircorp and Air Force, my grandmother still retains his gun collection. There is another 1886 in very good condition. I will have to get some more info on it, but I believe it is in 45-90. Only a few guns, have made it out to family members .
Here is the info from the letter, and some pictures included.
Type: Rilfe
Barrel Type: Octagon
Barrel Length: 24 inches
Trigger: Set
Target 3-1/2
Received in warehouse on March 07, 1874
Shipped from warehouse on April 10, 1884, Order Number 1246

Rod,
No you haven’t reported it to me yet. A good early rifle for sure. Post a picture of the rear sight.
Thanks, Bob

Hello Bob, I handled an 1873 today at a local gun shop. Following is the info I have on it.
Winchester 1873 rifle, first model.
44 caliber
# 377341 B (corrected)
Full octagon bbl, with full length magazine with a slot on the end.
Brass but plate with a little hatch that I could not get opened.
I am not sure of the bbl. length, a guess would be 26″ or longer.
No bluing or case hardening showing. Replacement but stock.
Ed,
The serial number for a first model does not have a B so either the serial number has been changed or its third model tang with a incomplete serial number.

Ed,
To have a B at the end of the serial number it would need a 6 digit serial number. A picture of the gun and serial number would tell whats going on.
