Been to look at a 1892 src in 44-40

canadian marked barrel serial number 772777

far cry from a high end collector gun but bore is shiny without a lot of pitting, small amount at the muzzle but good rifling for a gun of its age.

can anyone please confirm the month and year of manufacture

Question to the experts, clean 100 years of crud off with acetone of leave alone ?

barrel and forend loop has a look like it’s got some sort of varnish on it.

obviously I’ll remove wood first

What are your long-term plans for the gun? Any signs of rust? I agree with Bert but quite honestly I’d want to clean it up to make sure the crud wasn’t hiding rust and then I’d probably want to shoot it. But I’m no expert and I haven’t stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in years.

What looks like varnish could be dried oil.  I would never use acetone.  It will damage the finish on the wood.  I would use a gun oil and a tooth brush to wipe the metal parts.

It’s going to be a shooting rife, I’ll take the woodwork off before I clean the metalwork, might use methylated spirits as it’s easy to get in the UK.

I’ll check for rust once stripped down, once cleaned I’ll use renovation wax to protect the metalwork

The foreground is out of focus, can you redo the pic with the stamps in focus?
