If the lid is original, that’s quite scarce; however, it looks like a different kind of wood. Check ebay for values, though you’ll probably have to wade through scores of repros.
Clarence, do you know if there were any markings on the original lid? The sellers price is $100, I’m inclined to get it regardless of the lid
In my opinion the lid is not original and is a newer replacement including the hinges. The wood is a different type and someone tried staining it to match. The original ammo crate tops were merely nailed onto the rest of the box. These boxes were not meant to be re-used and merely for shipping purposes only. A lot of shooting clubs back before WWII, when these crates were common, even used the busted up wood crates to burn in their heaters to keep warm.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Didn’t notice hinges, but if it has those, it’s definitely non-original. Still, no reason to reject it, if price is fair, & even a non-original lid is better than none at all.

My comments were not meant as a Rejection of the entire piece, merely to point out that the lid with its hinges were not original. Its not a firearm so I wouldn’t be overly concerned about a few flaws as such. Accoutrements such as these are nice to have but being as they were originally not meant to last. The condition as such is par for the course.
Sincerely,
Maverick

I like the utility of a nice, small shipping crate for storage in my loading room. Mine are all reproductions but I like looking at them and they are sturdy. The small 22 brick cartons are great for small reloading tools. A vintage shipping crate with a hinge would be a nice addition to my loading room.
