Last week a friend gave me an empty cigar box with individual cartridges. When I took a closer look at it, I discovered a cartridge that I had never seen before. A 236 US Navy with rim. Did I miss this before or is it a rarity?

I purchased this Mills double row ammo belt years ago. I thought at the time it was made for 25/35 cartridges. The wooden dummy shells look alot like a 25/35. I thought it was a pretty pricey error at the time. Now I am not so sure.

No measurements, but these are the dummy shells with a 25/35 for comparison. The dummies will not chamber in 25/35 rifle. RDB

Are they marked at all? On the head like a head-stamp?

What is the diameter of the bullet? The Lee Navy is .243″ or 6mm. The 25-35 is .257″. A 6.5 mm is .264″. The 270 is .277″. A 7mm is 284″

.256″ dia. bullet in the dummy cartridges. The ‘case’ diameter is .423″ where it meets the rim. Outer rim diameter .502″. Case length 2.126″. OAL 2.660″ Hope this helps. RDB

The measurements are close to the 25-35 except the case length.
Bullet diameter .257″
Head diameter .422″
Rim diameter .506″
Case length 2.043“
OAL 2.60″
What is the measurement where the shoulder joins the body? This could be too fat.

At the sholder .369. Hope this helps. Who ever made the dummy cartridges went to a lot of trouble. The bullets are all a nice “lead gray” color. Maybe 250 Savage? RDB

Shoulder should be .325″. I bet this is the problem. The taper from the head to the shoulder is probably not enough.
Very cool set up Roger. Winchester supplied various types of buckles to Mills. Military and civilian. The 2 companies had a good relationship. That’s why many Winchester ammo boxes have a Mills ad.

Thanks for the information Chuck. After paying $375 for the belt and dummies, I kinda felt like a “Dummy” when I discovered my mistake It is a nice double loop belt though. It looks good hanging on the rack.

Roger, what did you think you were getting? I think the Mills belt and buckle is cool with the dummy rounds.

I wanted a double loop cartridge belt to go with my 1895 in 30 GOVt. 06. I thought the loops had possibly shrunnk over time and by wetting the belt it might stretch back out to ’06. I decided not to soak the belt and leave it as is. Another “But I thought” moment in my life. RDB
