Recently picked up a beautiful rifle with a little handling wear.  Very clean. Hornady has dropped their .348 line of bullets and Barnes

only makes a limited run.  Bullets available from Hawk Bullets in New Jesey.  Would be interested in getting a mold.  Does anyone have any suggestion.

Lyman, Saeco Lee have all discontinued their molds

Thanks

Welcome, Joel. A few years ago I picked up a few boxes of recent manufacture Winchester ammo. I don’t know if they’ll ever get caught up enough to make it again but you may find some if you’re lucky. I’m pretty sure Accurate will make a mould for you.

You just have to keep an eye out on places like Ebay etc for used molds.  I found a Lyman/Ideal mold 350447 on Ebay several years ago.  You could also get a custom made mold.  Accurate molds does a great job (as do other custom mold makers).

I don’t find these priced excessively (comparatively).  For comparison, I just checked ammoseek this morning and the cheapest box of Remington or Federal .32 Special was $70.  This same outfit – Grayback – has .32 Special for $65.

On the topic of the .348, anyone ever hunt with the 150 grain loads?  I’ve always heard to avoid them (poor sectional densitiy).  But, Winchester did make them and they must have seen use.

All I have seen and used are the 200 grain bullets.

As well as the 150 grain bullets there were 250 grain bullets.I believe Barnes makes a .348 250 grain bullet, but I know of no one making a 150 grainer.Like you, I to wonder just how good or bad the 150 grain bullets were.Should work on a deer I would think.

I see no reason a 150 grain bullet wouldn’t work.  The BC has no impact on the killing power of a bullet.  It is a reference of how well the bullet flies.  If it shoots well and the shot is well placed are all that matters.

Elmer Keith wrote in 1936; “The 150 grain bullet is too short and is not accurate.”

According to Clyde Williamson’s book ” First loadings were a 150 grain bullet at 2900fps and a 200 grain bullet at 2550fps.” Williamson doesn’t list a load for the 150gr bullet. T/R

I have gathered and shot a half dozen different model 71s and still have some Winchester 150 gr ammo and none of the different model 71s shoot the 150 gr ammo very well , the 348 seems to be the most accurate at 200 grain ammo

It’s pretty hard to argue with Elmer Keith. I two have played with the 71 and the lighter bullet feels better but isn’t. T/R

Just wondering, what is the accuracy with the 150 grain .348 bullet at a given range?
