Recently purchased a model 1886 in 40-82. I have resized some 45-90 brass to 40-82 and the empty cases chamber fine. The bore is on the larger side, so need to use a .409 dia. bullet. With the larger dia. bullet seated, there is a chambering issue due to growth of the case wall thickness near the base of the bullet and start of the taper of the case. Mike Venturino mentions having to inside neck ream 40-82 cartridges due to this issue, but there is no detail on the inside diameter prior to reaming, nor the size reamed to. Appreciate any tips or help on getting this fine rifle on the range.

I have no experience with inside neck reaming. I use a 408″ bullet in my 40 cal but my barrel slugged at .406″. Midway does sell a neck reamer at .40″ and .41″. What is the ID and thickness of the necks? I would suggest you use a .408″ bullet and see if this works. If not you can outside neck trim if they make a mandrel in 40 cal.
Thanks Gentlemen. I have .408 and .409 dia. 260 grain nominal bullets. The .408 dia bullets increase the cartridge neck O.D. diameter to .430 to .431″ at the juncture of the bottleneck. These do not chamber. I had to turn the cartridges to an O.D. of .427 to chamber. This was done by chucking up a case and sanding until it fit. Saw Mike Venturino recommended inside neck reaming in his booking “Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West” in the section regarding the 40-82 and use of bullets larger than .406″ dia. due to bore size running around .409″
