A few years back, I came across this photo. Without text to accompany it, the ending to the story of what happened seemed to be evident.
Recently I looked on the internet to find the story. Pretty much instantly, there it was: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1314&dat=19230717&id=7eZVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=weEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2945,2060114&hl=en. Seems a better way to die than being hit by a bus. The result is the same, but I’d chose dying in the woods.
Sometimes even the best rifles jam. Possibly a Winchester?
He must have been using Lester’s ammunition.

You fellows are a good comedy duo. Chuckling all the way.
I thought it must have been a Marlin also.
A Winchester would never let you down like that. Winchesters are so much more beautiful than any Marlin. I come from a Winchester-only family. I shoot a ’73 or ’94’s a few times each month. This all adds up to a pretty flimsy foundation for my Winchester/Marlin bias; having never hunted with a Marlin, nor shot a Marlin, nor held a Marlin, nor touched a Marlin.–Nor have I said “Marlin” more than twice in a year (until this post.) Yet from such powerful non-evidence, I hold in my heart a place for all lever-Winchesters, with no room for even the concept that a Marlin just might be a fine firearm after all.
Winchester vs. Marlin–Ford vs. Chevy–.32WS vs. .30WCF–Our mascot vs. Their mascot.
Well in 1905 the hunter if he had used a Winchester, the only model guns chambered for 45-70 would’ve been the 1885 & 1886. And I don’t see either one of those jamming fairly easy. Maybe it was a Ballard? Surely it wasn’t a Sharps or a Springfield. Very interesting story indeed. Imagine if it hadn’t been discovered in 1923, and only found recently. Like that model 73 that was recently found in the national park. It be a media headliner for sure.
Sincerely,
Maverick
