So I sent an 1886 action to Wyoming Armory for complete restoration. I sent the Cody letter with it. I got this thing back and it is the most beautiful rifle I’ve ever seen. They did this thing up TO THE LETTER. Made 1888, 40-65 WCF. Factory 28” barrel made new with factory roll-stamping. New black walnut stock. My question is who may know a good load for this. I have 4lb of IMR 3031 and a bunch of .408 260gr gas-checks from Buffalo Arms. What would be a good load for this new barrel to start with?

So I couldn’t wait. I loaded 5 rounds each from 31 to 35gr with IMR 3031 and .408 260 gr jsp. This thing liked 35gr. Just under 1.5” at 100 yds. Those jsp’s are $2 each (just the bullet) it was worth it. Now I have a bunch of 260gr gas-checks. I don’t know how they will shoot. Probably have to drop a grain or so.
Mark Douglas and his peeps at Wyoming Armory did such a wonderful job on this rifle. I can’t even describe the quality of smithing that they did for me. It is as if it came brand new in 1889 if I had ordered it through Roebuck or Wards. Mark and his crew are amazing.

Would love to see some photos! Mark does amazing work as demonstrated in his Cinnabar videos. Am anxious to see one of his full restorations as with your rifle. Is the receiver finish color case hardened or blued?Don
I sent the Cody letter and they followed it.
It is perfectly brand new. CCH receiver, hammer, lower-tang, lever, buttplate and tip-cap. New 28” barrel. New black walnut stock.
the gun is brand new

Thanks posting the photos. Looks like a top-notch restoration–congratulations! I like how all the stampings are crisp, the wood to metal fit looks great, and the case-coloring is very nicely done (and not over-done). Although I prefer factory-original for my personal collection, I would definitely pick a nice restoration like yours over any modern-produced replica any day.

If the action is in that time frame, shouldn’t you be shooting black powder loads? My 1886 first year 45-70, I only shoot BP.
Proper smokeless loads are perfectly safe to shoot in any Model 1886 that is in sound mechanical condition. They only thing I would avoid shooting are the modern 300 grain jacketed bullet loads.

Very nice indeed, looking forward to a range report on the cast bullets.
