Hi,

I have a Winchester Model 90 with a round barrel marked 22LR.  I’m trying determine a value for the gun, but I’m struggling.  The gun serial number indicates that it is a 2nd generation, the barrel is marked Model 90 22LR and is stamped with a “p” on the underside (from what I have read, means the barrel was mailed from Winchester to a gunsmith to replace the original barrel).  The value of these guns are all over the place, I understand condition is a large factor when trying to determine the value.  The gun is in good condition, no rust, very little blue wear, no damage to the stock or butt plate.  As of today, I have not found one of these with a round barrel marked with a “P”, I have found 3 round barrel Model 90s marked with a “WP” (the “WP” apparently indicates the gun was re-barreled at the Winchester factory). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Read this and then post some pictures.

What is the serial number?  The WP is the Winchester proof mark placed on all of the factory barrels.

Any Model 1890 that has had its barrel replaced will suffer a large decrease in value, compared to one that is still original.  Original condition determines, to a large degree, the value. (Caliber also plays a part, as those 1890/90 rifles chambered for .22 LR tend to be in much greater demand.)  With a replacement barrel, I would see the rifle in question as a shooter grade rifle, not a collectible.

Chris,

Based on your description, your Winchester is a Model 1890 that has been reworked in the aftermarket.  The “(P)” should be on the top if the barrel if it was correctly/properly installed.  As mentioned, it does not have much (if any) value in the collector market.  As a “shooter” grade rifle, the value will depend on how well it cycles and shoots the 22 LR ammo.

In regard to your other three round barrel Model 90s, what are the serial numbers on them?  The reason I ask is because I have been actively surveying the late production Model 90 and Model 06 rifles.  I very recently wrote an article that will be published in the WACA Winchester Collector magazine in the near future.  In that article, I specifically focused on the late production Model 90 and Model 06 rifles, including the late production Model 90 rifles found with 23-inch round barrels.

This is a brief preview of the article;

Here is another one with the WP on the barrel.  I still have not found one with the “p” on the barrel.
