I own a 1935 vintage Model 61 passed down through the family, S/N 13235. It is in excellent condition. The only deviation from pristine is it has two drilled and tapped holes, filled with hex head screws, longitudely at the base of the barrel about 10 o’clock on the left side, approx 1- 3/4″ apart. Obviously not for a scope, has anyone seen this, was this commonly done, if so, for what purpose? They do not extend into the barrel. Unsuccessful at attaching photo.
There were some scope mounts of the period that utilized the rear sight dovetail and only required drilling for the rearward mount. It is possible that was what was done but pictures would certainly help. There were also some small scopes (like the Boone scope for example) that only utilized a single mounting position, usually rearward. Again, pictures would help tremendously.

I discovered an old photo showing my mom when she was about 5 years old (around 1938) holding the rifle and a rabbit by the ears… and it had a scope on it! mystery solved. I am looking for a buyer if anyone is interested, It is in incredibly good condition! $1200
PS… how do you attach photos here? What do I enter for “source” when the photos are on my computer?
Ron Jackson, Emmett said PS… how do you attach photos here? What do I enter for “source” when the photos are on my computer?
Ron, you can’t, as a guest. You might be able to post it first on a photo hosting website, then try downloading to this site. Theoretically this should “work,” but many find that it doesn’t. Nothing to loose by trying, however.
Does the photo go with the gun?
