Picked up a Winchester Model 67 Marked Short Long and Long Rifle. 27″ barrel. Walnut Stock
Has No Provision for a Dovetail rear sight, The Receiver has 2 holes drilled in top of the Receiver and 2 more about 6 inches further forward.
Also is set up for a rear receiver sight, and front sight.
Fairly sure this is a factory set up.
Thought only the 677 were made for a factory scope.The Proof mark is set to the side not on top.
What might I have?? My Herbert Houze book has nothing on this.
An other weird thing is it has Belgium Proof marks on it with serial numbers stamped on it.

Once we can see the pictures we should be able to help.
The nine (9) factory-scoped Model 67’s include the G67750R (677 w/2 3/4x), G67766R (677 w/5x), G67770R (.22 WRF 677 w/2 3/4x), G67780R (.22 WRF 677 w/5x) and the “dual sight” 67 models with both scope and iron sights which include the G6751R, G6752R, G6755R, G6756R and the G6762R.
Useful pictures would be the muzzle, the proof marks, the mounting holes, barrel roll-marking and an overall picture of the rifle and stock.
Also, what is the barrel length? And what is the measurement center to center from the rear mounting base to the front?
This information is what defines what you have as indicated by the catalog model numbers above.

The barrel is 27″. Spacing in the Mounting holes in 5 7/8 from front hole to rear Hole.
Mounting screw recesses in to the stock.
I doubt the front sight is original, the hole seems to be stripped out.
Just being curious.
I’ve got a Model 69A, a 121, and a 131 in the house.

Hi Dave,
Great, those pictures and dimensions tell the whole story. What you have is a Winchester catalog number G67766R. The G67766R is a Model 677 that came equipped with the Winchester 5X scope and no open sights (not even a dovetail provision). Your specific rifle was shipped to England for use by the British Home Guard in WWII. During it’s service the fragile scope was likely removed (or never installed) and it was drilled and fitted with a Parker Hale front ramp sight and a Parker Hale receiver sight (which is missing). It was not a “Lend Lease” rifle but was purchased directly from Winchester by the British Government.
There are some great books about the British Home Guard but one of the best (in my opinion) is the recently released book by Malcolm Atkin titled “Cinderella Rifles – The .22 Rifle in Home Guard and Auxiliary Units Service”. $12.77 paperback or $6.38 Kindle. I have a Winchester 697 that has had the exact same modifications and PH sights added.

Wow ! Now that is Neat.
Bore is very clean and it does go bang. No telling how accurate it may be.
Guess I’m on the search for the correct scope and or Parker Hale receiver sight.
Didn’t pay much for the rifle, so I might be able to afford the sight or scope. HA, HA.
Might be a Christmas Present to myself.
My 69A came from Century (from a Show) I’ll have to check further on that on for other marking. Proof marks.

I also just read the Atkin book recently at Jeff’s suggestion…quite interesting the role those .22s played, not something thought of or talked about often. The proofs are neat and look pretty sharp, different and better than many I’ve seen!

Not sure if this affects your decision making process but the correct 5X scope and bases will cost you $600-700. The Parker Hale sights are going for $150-$200ish.
Since it has the late style pre-war stock there is a good chance it was shipped without a scope, the British proof mark under where the rear base would normally be is also a clue. The Brits were desperate and bought every .22 Winchester had in stock that would go “bang”. They sorted the sights out on their end when they were received. Winchester ran out of the “see-through” bases before anything else so Parker Hale made copies of them to mount the Winchester scopes. When Winchester then ran out of scopes Parker Hale took the rifles minus the scopes and added PH sights to them. They were desperate times……
That is why it is so cool to see rifles with a history like yours.

Had thought about selling the Winchester, but with the history, I’ll just add it to my small collection.
Fairly sure I knew the scopes assembly would be costly.
Now I Just want to get it back to where I can get it in shooting condition. Will be on the look out for the sights, might take a while, and as I said It Might be My Christmas Present to myself if found.
Got the Book coming from Amazon. Going to be great reading.
Had a $20 gift card from Red Cross Blood Donation so great timing.

Jeff, Elliott and I (AKA .22 nut, .22 nut #2, and a greenhorn .22 nut) were debating the British proof marks in Cody….seems collectors are split on whether they’re cool or not. Personally, I like them! That history and journey of the gun couldn’t make it any cooler!

So, as a newbie collector long ago I didn’t like them, I was on the hunt for all original, correct specimens, but now that I have those, I like the cool factor and provenance of the ones with “British Graffiti” on them as well.

What Parker Hale Rear would I be looking for? For the Rounded Receiver. The PH 16 ? Not a Lot of info out there.

Yes, the PH16 is the one you need but be very, very careful as the PH16 was made in a lot of different configurations for a large variety of rifles. Some of the sights have a suffix such as the PH16G to denote the application but some of the early ones are only marked “PH16” so you have to check the mounting hole spacing, the inside radius to match your receiver and the mounting position (you need a left-side mounted sight) since some came as a right sight mount.
I am currently in the process of looking for one also so hopefully we won’t get into a bidding war on eBay 😉
